In terms of sales of foldables in India, Samsung is the clear market leader at the moment. One cannot ignore the fact that Samsung has consistently introduced every foldable product it has introduced to the market in India, regardless of the features that these devices offer or the brand’s reputation as a high-end smartphone brand. As it happens, this also demonstrates Samsung’s dedication to the little things that count—like software support and after-sales care—when it comes to foldable technology.

OnePlus has been chasing Samsung in the premium segment for the past few years. What started out as a brand trying to make a difference (in terms of software and hardware) with affordable “flagship killers” is now producing proper premium devices that compete with big brands like Samsung and Motorola. It has evolved into something like a swan with OnePlus’ products are not only value for money, but also focus on a well-optimized software experience.

Over the years, this Chinese smartphone brand has also successfully developed its own ecosystem of devices, including audio accessories, tablets, and televisions, which in some ways puts it on par with Samsung, if not Apple. I’m building it. So what happens when a competitive brand like OnePlus decides to take over his one area that Samsung has specialized in for the past four years? Can we top the experience with Samsung’s foldable device? Will fans and customers be interested in putting their money on the line in the smartphone space that has been dominated by Apple and Samsung? Read on to find out.

OnePlus India Open Price

With 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, the OnePlus Open costs Rs. 1,39,999 in India. Voyager Black and Emerald Dusk are the two finishes available for the device. For review, I was given the Voyager Black unit. OnePlus includes an 80W charger, a two-piece polymer protective case, and a USB Type-A to Type-C cable in the box for data transfers and charging.

OnePlus Open Evaluation: Form

OnePlus smartphones are usually known for their high quality and well-balanced designs. This is OnePlus’ only affordable Nord series, which recently went for a chiseled design with flat sides and sharp edges to appeal to younger customers.

The Open is a big departure from the usual design language we’ve come to expect from OnePlus’ premium smartphones. OnePlus Open’s Voyager Black finish has a synthetic leather back I love the camera-like look of the Voyager Black interface, which instantly reminds everyone of retro cameras. The back of the phone has a beautiful synthetic leather texture that not only gives it a distinctive and unique look, but also provides excellent grip. The soft gray metal frame also reminds us of professional high-end cameras, and the large raised camera module on the back completes the look.  The placement of the flash unit outside the camera module is also unique. Overall, the OnePlus Open feels very special and premium, and is very different from the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, which looks like a regular smartphone. Like most foldable devices, the hinge is on the left side of the phone when folded closed. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5’s overall rounded design hides it well, but the OnePlus Open’s hinge (albeit perfectly polished) sticks into your hand and feels a little uncomfortable. This happens when you hold the phone with your left hand because your right hand wasn’t touching the hinge.

Another detail that takes some learning is button placement. When folded, the top half of the device houses the iconic alert slider switch, while the bottom half houses the power button and volume controls. OnePlus smartphones typically have an alert slider and power button on the right side, and a volume rocker on the left side. The OnePlus Open features a strange button layout that is very different from typical OnePlus smartphones. I’ve been using this phone for a few weeks now, but I’m still having trouble finding the volume button, which is located a little higher on the right side. When you “open” the screen, the alert slider will change position to the left side of your phone.

I understand that the Open is not a typical OnePlus smartphone, but OnePlus should have gone with the typical layout of all three buttons instead of the others.

Another issue that often comes to mind when choosing a foldable device is weight. Samsung Galaxy Z Folds often weigh over a quarter of a kilo (253 g to be exact), so we don’t shy away from this.

Google’s Pixel Fold is heavy at 283g, so even with its slim design (which it isn’t) you’ll notice it’s bulky in your pocket. OnePlus has done a good job here. Weighing between 239 and 245g (depending on the finish you choose), it’s much slimmer when unfolded and weighs the same as last year’s iPhone 14 Pro Max (240g). Samsung’s foldable devices have gotten incredibly heavy in recent years.

OnePlus Open features a unique hinge that makes the phone extremely slim and compact However, when comparing these foldable devices, it’s important to note that OnePlus omits the wireless charging feature that both Samsung and Google’s foldables offer. And perhaps that’s one of the reasons for Open’s slimmer, lighter design.

Finally, for a phone as pricey and slim as the Open, I’m glad OnePlus took the bare minimum into account in his IP rating. The OnePlus Open has an IPX4 rating, which means it’s good against rain splashes and has basic water resistance. In this regard, Samsung offers better results with its IPX8 rating.

Features and software of the OnePlus Open Review

It’s great to see OnePlus going all out when it comes to open-folding hardware. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC paired with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. The SIM card tray doesn’t have an expandable storage slot, but it does have space for two SIM cards, which is likely to be attractive to many power users. There’s a 7.82-inch AMOLED main display with 2,268 x 2,440 pixels, a 1.0758:1 (nearly 1:1) aspect ratio, and a 120Hz refresh rate with LTPO 3.0 support. Protected with ultra-thin glass solution (UTG).

The cover display measures 6.31 inches, has a resolution of 1,116 x 2,484 pixels, an aspect ratio of 20:09, is also an AMOLED type, and has a refresh rate of 120 Hz (LTPO 3.0). What’s impressive about these displays is that OnePlus offers his 240Hz touch sampling rate, which comes in handy for demanding games. The fingerprint reader is integrated into the power button and worked reliably during our testing period. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, and support for various global positioning systems.

Last but not least, there is a USB Type-C port with USB 3.1 support and an infrared port on the top for controlling other devices and applications. Thanks to Open Canvas, Open can run three apps in a three-part layout, as well as a fourth app in a floating window. Since this was OnePlus’ first foldable device, I was very excited to try out his OxygenOS 13, which is optimized for this foldable device. OnePlus has not yet officially released OxygenOS 14, which is based on Android 14. This is a bit disappointing considering Samsung has already started rolling out Android 14 for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and other recently launched devices. Surprisingly, this adjustment is very similar to what I experienced with the recently launched premium tablet OnePlus Pad (review).

The app layout is similar, but OnePlus has a new Open Canvas software feature that lets you open up to three apps side-by-side in a split-screen-like format. Samsung also allows this, but with Samsung’s One UI the first app usually occupies half of the main display, and the other two apps share a quarter of the other half. Open Canvas allows him to open two apps side by side in a dual split layout. Both apps take up half of the main display, leaving some space for him to run a third app on the side with only a portion of it visible. In this triple split layout. Just tap that strip and the entire screen will move sideways to fully display the second and third apps.

Samsung allows the same, but with Samsung’s One UI, the first app typically occupies half of the main display, and the other two apps share a quarter of the other half. Open Canvas allows him to open two apps side by side in a dual split layout.

Both apps take up half of the main display, leaving room for a third app to run to the side with a portion of it visible. In this triple split layout. Just tap that strip and the whole screen will move sideways so that your second and his third apps are fully visible. Pinch four fingers to see all three apps (or four if you’re using an additional window app) at once, or perform a four-finger spread gesture to exit full-view mode can also do. In fact, Open Canvas provides a hassle-free way to run three apps at the same time while making the most of the main folding display, despite its odd 1:1 aspect ratio. Recent folder lets you drag and drop files into supported apps Another useful software addition is the recent folder at the bottom of the taskbar. Tap this to see recent photos, screenshots, files, and other items that you can easily drag and drop into apps that support this feature. The three-part app layout, combined with the Recent Files folder, creates a very desktop-like layout that takes full advantage of your main display.

Performance Analysis of OnePlus Open

What’s impressive about the OnePlus Open’s multitasking capabilities is that everything runs buttery smooth. There were no lags, hiccups, or stutters while operating the device. Some apps, such as Google Keep, require you to rotate your device horizontally to enter tablet mode One thing I wasn’t particularly happy with primarily revolved around how Android worked. Most apps that support a tablet-like layout (such as Google Keep) often display the app in this mode, but only when rotated in landscape mode.

With the Google Pixel Fold, the foldable device opens directly into a landscape format model thanks to a wide cover display and a main display. In the open it becomes even more difficult to see which direction you are in. To find and run apps in tablet mode, which provides a split-screen interface, you must change the orientation of your device. Fortunately, most messaging apps support a split-screen layout, even when held vertically, with the chat thread visible on one side and the chat open on the other. Movies shot in widescreen cinema format will have many letterboxed elements on Open’s square main display.

When watching Netflix shows (which are usually shot in 16:9 widescreen), it’s more beneficial to have the main display open, as the content is actually displayed larger than the cover display. However, this does not apply to apps like YouTube and other OTT apps that host content and movies produced in larger formats (for movie theaters) with different aspect ratios. These look very odd with a lot of letterboxing, but they actually look great on a cover display or on a normal 19.3:9 to 19:5:9 aspect ratio display available on most regular flagship smartphones.

Masu. It was nice to see support for something like Samsung Flex Mode in some video apps. This allows half of the main display to stand upright and the other half to support the phone, allowing you to comfortably watch videos without the need for a stand. stand cover or case. The cover display is wide enough (20:9) to function almost like a regular smartphone, compared to the lower resolution cover display (23.1:9) of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, which looks like a TV remote control . However, it is still not as wide as a typical smartphone (19.5:9), so typing may feel a little cramped for some people. However, I found the Open’s cover display to be large enough to play comfortably. OnePlus Open’s cover display is wide enough that you can use it like a regular phone

OnePlus Open front cover display ndtv OnePlusOpen OnePlus

OnePlus Open’s cover display is wide enough that you can use it like a regular phone The phone performed as expected in our regular benchmark tests, achieving results comparable to other devices with the same processor, while gaming performance was also quite impressive.

The 240Hz touch sampling rate is much better than what Samsung offers on the Galaxy Z Fold 5 in terms of responsiveness. The phone also features a slide-out gaming console with various optimization features, Pro Gamer Mode (no limits on display processing power) and Championship Mode to eliminate distractions. In fact, the OnePlus Open is the first foldable device I’ve ever seen that’s actually designed for mobile gamers, and it worked flawlessly no matter what games I ran it on. Slight display wrinkles caused by the hinge are hardly noticeable Both displays support HDR10+ and Dolby Vision formats, making them ideal for Netflix and other OTT apps that offer supported content. The quirky three-speaker setup is quite impressive in terms of audio quality, producing good spatial sound with decent bass. This is impressive for a device with the overall thickness of the USB-C port. Another detail about the display is that it actually has stylus support (Oppo Pen), but OnePlus just hasn’t released any official accessories. Foldable devices always give some battery anxiety, but the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 improves it even more, delivering more than a day of battery life on a single charge.

OnePlus Open raises the bar for battery life and charging. With occasional use, it can easily last more than a day and a half on a single charge. During heavy use, including 30 minutes of gaming, 1 hour of video streaming, and 15 minutes of video recording and photography, battery life often dropped to about 40% before bed. Most days this wasn’t enough to charge it overnight as I was confident my phone could easily last until noon the next day.

In fact, the OnePlus Open is the first foldable device I’ve used that literally behaves like a regular phablet-sized flagship in terms of battery life. OnePlus Open only offers wired charging As mentioned earlier in this review, this phone doesn’t have wireless charging capabilities like the Galaxy Z Fold 5. However, this is compensated for by his 80W wired charging, which is much faster than the charging capabilities of his competitors. This charger charged the device to 67% in 30 minutes and finished charging in just 53 minutes. This is much faster than the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

Review of the OnePlus Open: Lenses

OnePlus Open offers an impressive array of cameras for a foldable device. There’s a 48-megapixel primary camera (with OIS), a 64-megapixel telephoto camera (with OIS) with 3x optical zoom, and a 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with a 114-degree field of view. Like other horizontally foldable devices, there are two selfie cameras: a 32-megapixel camera integrated into the cover display and a 20-megapixel camera integrated into the main foldable display.

The sensor behind the main camera is special because it’s part of Sony’s new LYTIA series, a long-awaited upgrade to the ExmorRS sensor. It has a large photodiode that essentially collects twice as much light. The stacked architecture also provides the power of a larger sensor while being compact enough to fit into this foldable device’s thin frame. OnePlus Open has a very capable rear camera layout Video recording maxes out at 4K, 60 frames per second, but the phone also offers Dolby Vision video recording, which is limited to his 4K, 30 frames per second.

The camera interface is typically OnePlus, with customizable shooting modes, and thanks to the brand’s collaboration with camera manufacturer Hasselblad, photos receive a very unique color treatment. There’s also his XPan mode for taking photos in a wider than normal 35mm panoramic format. You can also take photos with the main display open, so you can preview your photos in a split-screen view (rather than a small thumbnail) while you take them. OnePlus Open daylight camera example. From top: Main camera, telephoto camera, macro mode (tap the image to enlarge) Image quality is very good overall, especially after a recent software update that brought significant improvements to portrait mode and the telephoto camera. The main camera takes high-quality photos with high contrast and sharp details under all lighting conditions.

These images show slightly more saturated colors and appear slightly more contrasting, thanks to Hasselblad’s color input. I usually prefer more natural colors, but I really appreciate Hasselblad’s input on this camera system. OnePlus Open daylight zoom camera example. (Tap the image to enlarge) The telephoto camera is definitely the highlight of this new camera system. It can take photos with 3x optical zoom and also 6x in-sensor zoom, which is said to offer lossless quality. Images taken with the native 3x zoom are extremely sharp and detailed in any lighting condition. Fast-moving subjects such as pets or children are a little more difficult, but if you can keep them reasonably still, you can get great results with natural bokeh. The photos I took with the 6x in-sensor zoom also looked pretty good. Image quality lasts up to 10x, but degrades beyond that. OnePlus example Open the camera in a dark place. Review of OnePlus Open: Lifting the StandardReview of OnePlus Open: Lifting the Standard

OnePlus example Open the camera in a dark place. Top: Main camera (night mode) Bottom: Ultra-wide camera (night mode) The ultra-wide photo offers good detail and dynamic range, but I noticed a lot of purple fringing in bright areas of the image. In low-light conditions, images taken with this camera seemed a little soft. Being able to take selfies using the rear camera (using the cover display as a viewfinder) allowed me to take clear selfies in any lighting conditions. The results for the selfie camera on the cover display and the main display were good.

OnePlus Open selfie camera example in low light (using main camera) During the day, videos play clearly and without noise, but low-light videos may show some noise, even when shot indoors in good lighting. Enabling Dolby Vision recording significantly degrades the video quality and is nowhere near what you can achieve with the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max. Videos shot in his 4K at 30 or 60 frames per second in low light are still usable, but you won’t see a normal premium smartphone in this price range perform much better when shot in the same scenario. I just saw it. The telephoto camera is also great for video recording, with no noise and stable output during the day.

Verdict on the OnePlus Open Review

With Open, OnePlus has completely changed the way I look at foldable devices. Devices that can be folded horizontally no longer have average cameras, have decent battery life, are slow to charge, and weigh more than a quarter of a kilo. Finally, there’s a foldable device that eliminates these drawbacks that we’ve grown accustomed to or taken for granted in recent years.

OnePlus has really raised the bar. Compared to traditional premium flagship smartphones, Open has few compromises. That alone speaks volumes about how far OnePlus has distanced itself from Samsung. OnePlus Open features a high-resolution cover display that you can use like a regular smartphone, a large foldable display with well-optimized software, and the same level of performance you’d expect from an ultra-premium flagship. We provide A high-quality camera in a foldable device. Not only does it offer a better display, better camera (in theory), faster charging and longer battery life, it’s also cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 (test report). What’s not to like?
