This broad view of his crewmates, astronauts Edward G. Gibson (left), a science pilot, and Jerry P. Carr (right), a commander, was captured on camera by astronaut William R. Pogue, a Skylab 4 pilot, on February 1, 1974. The third and last mission on the Skylab space station included multiple EVA sessions, and pieces of three spacesuits are also visible in the frame.

Nov. 16, 1973 saw the launch of Skylab 4. For the first time since Gemini 8 in 1966, Pogue, Gibson, and Carr comprised the entire crew. In addition to solar observations using instruments mounted on the Apollo Telescope Mount, Earth observations using the Earth Resources Experiment Package, and biomedical investigations into the effects of long-duration space flight on the human body, the crew carried out the scientific programme started by the previous two Skylab crews. Their science programme was expanded to include observations of comet Kohoutek, which was found earlier in the year and is expected to approach the Sun at its closest point in December.
Watch a summary of how Skylab’s legacy helped pave the way for the successful building and running of the International Space Station as well as upcoming extended human missions to Mars, asteroids, and other places.
