The narrative of Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik, and Nia DaCosta is distinct from that of the other Marvel movies. The screenplay by Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik, and Nia DaCosta is very new and full of interesting and funny moments. The narrative is kept light and entertaining by the dialogues.
The direction of Nia DaCosta is good. She focuses on the story right away, without wasting any time. The superheroes’ travel from place to place and eventual madness make for an extremely entertaining first fifteen to twenty minutes. Short but sweet is the Aladna sequence. Even more worthwhile is the bond that the three heroes have. The pre-climax sequence with the flerkens (animals resembling cats) is the most spectacular and devastating.
However, despite being the shortest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, THE MARVELS leaves the impression that it will end soon. Particularly in the battle at the end, one hopes for more. That villain track isn’t that good. For the uninitiated, the entire scene involving the trio’s teleportation may seem confusing. Several things have happened that are confusing, most notably the reason Carol has always been able to solve Hala’s issues. The movie isn’t getting much of a buzz, to sum up.
In relation to performances, Iman Vellani is a highly engaging performer. Her adoration for Captain Marvel may remind you of Peter Parker’s fixation on Iron Man during the Spider-Man movies. Iman, though, adds her cuteness to make sure that viewers aren’t reminded of an MCU mentor-protégé track. Brie Larson gives a self-assured performance. She puts on a charmingly silly act in certain scenes. Although Teyonah Parris is decent, Brie and Iman overwhelm her. Samuel L. Jackson makes people laugh and is as dependable as one might expect. Gary Lewis doesn’t get much of a chance, but Zawe Ashton is doing fine. One wishes Park Seo-joon, who plays Prince Yan, had more screen time because he is just too good.
The sound of Laura Karpman’s music is reminiscent of a superhero film. Sean Bobbitt has done appropriate cinematography. Rich production design is what Cara Brower does. Particularly the trio’s non-superhero attire, Lindsay Pugh’s costumes are chic. The action is not at all upsetting. Excellent visual effects. The editing of Catrin Hedström and Evan Schiff is very good.
The Marvel superhero saga is entertaining overall. However, strong word-of-mouth will be necessary to generate enough buzz given the lack of hype and fierce competition from TIGER 3.
