Assam’s chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, stated that the state’s crime rate has significantly decreased based on data from the National Crime Records Bureau. In Assam, it is 194.2 in 2022 compared to 341 in 2021.
407.6 crimes are committed nationwide per lakh of population.
Overview:Himanta Biswa Sarma
Compared to the 26933 violent crimes recorded in the state in 2021, the number of violent crimes recorded in 2022 is 14314, nearly half (roughly 47%) less. The crimes include murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, infanticide, foeticide, deaths from dower, attempt to commit murder, attempt to commit culpable homicide, and grievous hurt. After a considerable amount of time, Assam is no longer in the top five states for crimes against women.
Sarma claims that if law and order are upheld in the same way, Assam will turn into a “paradise” in three years.
Sarma’s comments came after the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) published a report revealing that, in comparison to the prior year, Assam had 48.26% fewer cases overall—nearly 69,000—of cognizable crimes in 2022.
He also mentioned that in 2023, the state’s crime rate fell. He stated that in the next years, the administration plans to build on this progress.
The Chief Minister claims that Assam’s crime rate has not decreased since 1979. When it came to crime rates in India in 2021, Assam came in at number ten. It’s great news that we are currently ranked 20th based on NCRB data, he said.
Sarma went on to say that the state’s declining crime rate has also been aided by youth employment and development initiatives. But he also warned that the number of drug cases and child marriages would rise as the state continued its operations against the threat.

“By 2026, we’ll end child marriage in Assam. Following the next assembly session, polygamy will also be abolished, the Chief Minister stated.
The conviction rate in 2022 was 13.56%, up from 6.13 percent the previous year. “Among the initiatives we have been putting into place are the creation of the Directorate of Prosecution and a regular prosecution service cadre. We hope to see a big improvement soon,” Sarma stated.
