New Delhi /Hyderabad:
The illegal sale of kidneys for organ transplants by Myanmar nationals has prompted the city government of New Delhi to launch an investigation into an Apollo hospital, which is a part of the country’s largest private hospital chain.
After a report in the British Telegraph accused Apollo of being involved in a “cash for kidneys” scandal involving Myanmar villagers, the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), which is part of the federal health ministry, wrote to the Delhi authorities.
According to the report, wealthy Burmese patients were being persuaded to buy kidneys from young, rural residents of Myanmar by flying them to the hospital in Delhi.

A Reuters request for comment was not immediately answered by Apollo Hospitals.
Apollo Hospitals stated in the report that it was “completely shocked” by the newspaper’s findings and that it would begin an internal investigation. The report was based on an undercover reporter’s conversations with agents and Apollo officials from Myanmar.
“Any suggestion of our wilful complicity or implicit sanctioning of any illegal activities relating to organ transplants is wholly denied,” Apollo was quoted as saying by the report.
“This issue requires a deep investigation and concrete evidence before deciding on the next course of action,” NOTTO Director Anil Kumar told Reuters on Wednesday.
According to a federal government directive, the city of Delhi is starting an investigation, according to Health Secretary S B Deepak Kumar, who spoke with Reuters.
An associate of Apollo that oversees its two hospitals in the Delhi region, Indraprastha Medical Corp., declared that it had opened an investigation into the situation and referred to the accusations made against it as “absolutely false, ill-informed, and misleading.”
According to a source with direct knowledge of the situation, Indraprastha Medical has promised to help and provide all pertinent information and data to authorities upon request, even though it has not yet received word from them that an investigation was being conducted.
When Reuters asked the Myanmar government for comment, they did not reply.
Based on corporate data, the Chennai-based Apollo chain, which operates more than 70 hospitals throughout India, carried out 1,641 solid organ transplants in 2022. Patients from abroad who travel to India are also taken care of at the hospital.
According to the Telegraph report, one of the most well-known and well-liked private hospitals in New Delhi is the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, which is located in Sarita Vihar in the southeast of the city.
